Thought for the Day
To say, "It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you're a good person" is akin to saying, "There's only one rule: no cheating."
Ora Pro Nobis, Sancta Dei Genitrix, Ut Digni Efficiamur Promisionibus Christi
Saint Thomas More
The very definition of an assenting Catholic, and therefore a fitting patron saint for this blog. Hilaire Belloc once explained that what was most remarkable about St. Thomas' martyrdom - for refusing to publicly acknowledge that King Henry VIII and Parliament had the right to legislate on religious matters that were properly the jurisdiction of the Pope - was that St. Thomas must have realized that his sacrifice was not going to lead to mass conversions to the faith. It was the simple act of an assenting Catholic who did not want to meet his God having denied the primacy of the temporal head of His Church. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and, along with St. John Fisher, was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935, exactly 400 years after both saints were martyred. In an incredibly morbid bit of irony, in 1980 St. Thomas More was also proclaimed a saint of the Anglican Church - the very church that St. Thomas refused to recognize, even at the cost of his own life. St. Thomas More, ora pro nobis!

I'm someone who, to quote the late and great Rich Mullins, is fast approaching the place "where I'm lost enough to let myself be led."
In five years, I hope to be able to look back on who I am today and realize what a fool I am. In ten years, I hope to be able to look back on the person that I will be in five years and realize what a fool I will become.
It profits not a man to gain the world if he lose his soul. With that in mind, I strive every day of my life to please God, and only to please others insofar as this is pleasing to God. This means that I strive to be a witness to the truth, even if it brings me into conflict with those who are offended by the truth. I consider it infinitely better to be cursed in the light of truth than to be praised in a darkness of lies...
